This mascot is a person, specifically a historical figure from the American Civil War. Here's the thing: General Stonewall Jackson was a Confederate general who fought to preserve slavery and white supremacy, which is a pretty heavy and problematic legacy. Until recently, there was a school in Florida, Stonewall Jackson Middle School, that bore his name. However, in 2020, the school was renamed to honor Roberto Clemente, a baseball legend and humanitarian, which is a much more positive and inspiring figure 🏆.
